Phanagoria and the Black Sea Dead
On the Taman Peninsula, where land meets the waters between the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, the ancient city of Phanagoria stood as a great Greek foundation of the northern Black Sea world. It was a place of trade, movement, and repeated reinvention, where Greeks, local peoples, steppe communities, merchants, and rulers all passed through its streets. What survives is not only ruined masonry and broken pottery, but a remarkable human archive: the bones of those buried from the Classical age to the time of the Khazars.
The southern and eastern necropolises of Phanagoria were carefully structured places of memory, where burial customs and grave goods preserved the drama of ordinary and extraordinary lives. Among those recovered were six individuals spanning nearly a millennium: a Classical-period woman of about fifty from the southern necropolis; a Hellenistic woman from the eastern necropolis dated to the second century before the common era; two Roman-period individuals, one a man of forty to forty-nine and one a child of around ten; a man of about fifty found within the Upper Town itself; and a child of six or seven from the Khazar period. Each burial belongs to a different chapter of the city's life.
Burial archaeology restores humanity to history. Grand texts celebrate kings and generals, but a necropolis gives space to the uncelebrated: women, children, and those who never appeared in writing. Their bones, grave construction, and associated objects speak with extraordinary force. The city was not built only by elites. It was lived by thousands whose traces survive in the soil.
The transformation of an ancient bone fragment into historical evidence begins with excavation but continues in the laboratory, where molecules rather than walls are studied. Ancient bone typically contains only traces of the original person's genetic material, heavily outnumbered by soil organisms and bacteria, and broken into chemically damaged fragments. Recovering meaningful information demands extraordinary care.
Small bone fragments are processed in clean laboratory conditions to prevent contamination from modern handlers. The ancient material is then prepared for sequencing using a single-stranded method especially suited to badly damaged remains, capturing short fragments that other approaches might lose. A characteristic damage pattern near fragment ends, where chemical letters are predictably misread, is both a technical nuisance and a powerful certificate of authenticity: it confirms the material is genuinely ancient.
Once sequenced, fragments are trimmed, aligned against a modern human reference, and checked for duplicates and contamination. The result is not a pristine genome but a battered collection of molecular scraps, enough to recover hints of sex, ancestry, and population history. The marvel is not that the data are messy. The marvel is that anything survives at all.
The Phanagoria individuals served as a testing ground for a pressing practical question: can results from different sequencing platforms be trusted together? The same prepared genetic libraries were read on four different systems, creating a fair comparison in which everything except the machine remained constant.
All four platforms produced data good enough for serious ancient work, with broadly similar performance. The damage patterns characteristic of ancient DNA remained highly consistent across all systems, preserving the core signature of authenticity. Most importantly, when results were used for population analysis, each individual clustered in the same place regardless of which machine had read them. The ancient people of Phanagoria emerged as coherent historical beings rather than machine-made distortions.
One notable difference appeared with the platform requiring fragments to be converted into circular form, which favored longer fragments and reduced the shortest pieces. For ancient DNA, where very short fragments are often the essence of the evidence, this could matter most for poorly preserved remains. Though it did not compromise the Phanagoria results, it signals caution for badly degraded future samples.
The historically richest question was what these six people reveal about ancestry in the Black Sea world. Phanagoria was a node linking the Mediterranean, Caucasus, Eurasian steppe, and inland trade routes, exactly where complicated ancestry would be expected. Comparing the individuals against both ancient and present-day Eurasian populations placed them within the broader landscape of human variation, touching deep historical streams: European hunter-gatherers, early Anatolian farmers, populations linked to regions south of the Caucasus, and the steppe world that repeatedly transformed Eurasia.
The long chronological span of the six individuals is crucial. A Classical-period woman and a Khazar-period child did not inhabit the same political world. Between them lie centuries of shifting trade routes and power structures. Even this small group begins to hint at continuity, replacement, and mixture across that long passage of time. The Khazar child is especially striking: centuries after Phanagoria's Greek phase, a child still grew up and was buried in the same soil, beneath the same accumulated layers of history.
What emerges is not a sensational tale of one dramatic migration but a subtler and more plausible picture. The inhabitants were not abstract Greeks or barbarians but real people shaped by the great crossroads of the Black Sea, whose lives reflected mixture, family continuity, and regional movement. Their bones carry the memory of those entanglements, and the soil of the necropolis has preserved enough for that memory to be read again.
